Jump Board

Cardio, lying down. A board on the end of the reformer, loud music, forty-five minutes.

Three people mid-sequence on reformers in a bright studio, one lunging on the carriage with arms raised.

This class isn’t for you if…

Jump Board is not for you if it is your first month, if you are pregnant, or if you want something quiet — it is the loudest class we run and there is music. It is also not for you if your knees, ankles or pelvic floor are currently a problem, because it is repeated impact for forty-five minutes even though you are lying down, and "low impact" is a claim we are not going to make about it. If you are coming back from any lower-limb injury, do Rehab & Recovery or talk to us first.

If that describes you, don’t book Jump Board —let the router find the right one, orask us. Nobody here is on commission.

Who it is for

You already know the machine, you already train, and you want the class that makes you breathe hard. People who came to pilates from running and missed the bit where their heart rate goes up tend to end up here within a month.

What fifty minutes of it feels like

Genuinely cardiovascular and quite fun, which is not a word that gets used much about the rest of the timetable. Your calves will let you know. Elin plays actual music at actual volume and counts out loud. The first time, most people stop halfway through a set because they did not expect to be out of breath lying down.

What actually happens

A padded board bolts onto the end of the reformer where the footbar normally is. You lie on your back and jump against it. The springs take most of your body weight, so it is jumping without the landing — which is why it works for people whose knees have opinions about running, and why it is still impact, which is why we are careful about who we put in it.

Forty-five minutes in intervals: jumping sets broken up with strap work and abdominal series so your legs get a chance to stop screaming. Elin has been teaching this one for four years and the playlist is not a democracy.

About the noise

We say “the loudest class we run” and mean it relative to the rest of Halcyon, which is a quiet building. It is not a nightclub. But there is music, there is counting, and there is the mechanical noise of twelve carriages moving fast. If you came to pilates specifically to get away from all of that, take Tower & Chair instead and we will not be offended.

Booking it

Jump Board fills faster than anything else on the timetable, usually three or four days out. If you want the Saturday 10:00 you need to book by Wednesday.

If that is not it

  • Foundations

The first six weeks. You learn the machine before you learn the workout.

  • Reformer Flow

The everyday class. Continuous, cued rather than demonstrated, and it assumes you know the machine.

  • Tower & Chair

Six people, springs instead of momentum. The quietest hard thing on the timetable.
